Saheb was a poor rag picker of Seemapuri who had migrated from Dhaka as storms swept away their home and fields. His complete name was "Saheb-e-Alam" meaning the lord of the universe.

He used to do rag picking to earn his living. Later in the story he got employed at a tea stall to earn money.
