How much shorter is to walk diagonally across a rectangular field 240m long and 70m wide than along the two adjacent sides.

So, we should calculate the distance and displacement.

Distance = 240+70 = 310 m

Displacement (by Pythagoras theorem)

= root over sum of 240 sq and 70 sq

= root of 62500

= 250 m

Difference = 310-250

= 60 m
