The original Mahabharata was written by Sage Vyasa contains only 8,800 Slokas with the title “JAYA”. It was expanded to 24,000 slokas, perhaps, by his disciple Vaisampayana with the title “BHARATA”. It was further expanded to 1,00,000 slokas by some other scholar with the title “MAHABHARATA”.
The Mahabharata, of which Bhagawad Gita was a part, consists of around 1,00,000 slokas. However, in the Mahabharata itself it was mentioned that the original version of the story of Pandavas and Kauravas consists of 8,800 slokas only with the titleJAYA.
So in the original version, Sri Krishna might have said a few morale boasting words to Arjuna, who was dejected at the start of the war. And, Arjuna might have been enlightened and war might have commenced.
In the later version, this short discourse of Sri Krishna with Arjuna might have been elaborated to 700 slokas in 1,00,000 slokas Mahabharata.
