Answer:

A leaf is already in the process of dying when it is shed by the tree. An abscission layer of cells forms to facilitate the separation of the leaf from the tree. As the temperature drops and the length of day shortens they start the tree to ready itself for winter. The chloroplasts in the leaf start to die and their chemicals are reabsorbed by the tree or woody plant leaving the yellow and red pigments or Carotenoids and Anthocyanins to color the leaves reds ,yellows and purples. They create the spectacular colors of autumn and then the leaves fall.
