A female mosquito searches for a blood vessel. When she finds one, she releases saliva into the wound. It contains a substance called an anti coagulation — that keeps your blood flowing so she can quickly get her fill of your blood. On average, they drink for around 4 minutes and at higher magnifications.

Male mosquitoes only eat the flower nectar but female mosquitoes eat the flower nectar and blood. Female mosquitoes bite and suck blood for reproduction. The females need the protein in blood to develop eggs.
