Two-thirds of the seeds germinated in fewer than four days -- more quickly than do fresh seeds from modern plants of yellow lotus(Nelumbo lutea). The seedlings were radiocarbon dated, with the oldest dated at around 1,288 yearsold, making it the oldest demonstrably viable and directly dated seed ever reported.
