After the end of Robespierre's rule, a directory was formed to avoid concentration of power in one individual's hand.
The political instability of the directory paved the way for the rise of a military dictator, Napoleon Bonaparte.
He crowned himself as the emperor of France in 1804. He set out to conquer the neibouring European countries, dispossesing dynasties and creating kingdoms where he placed his family members.
He introduced many laws such as protection of private property, uniform system of wieghts and measures provided by decimal system.
Many saw Napoleon as a liberator who would bring freedom for the people. But soon Napoleonic army began to be viewed everywhere as an invading force.
Finally he was defeated in Waterloo.
