When a message is formed in the cell body of a neuron it is transmitted chemically or through electric impulses. The chemical messengers travel over the nodes of Ranvier and electric impulses travel in the axon of the neuron. When the message reaches the tip of the neuron the nerve ending releases neurotransmitters which travel through the synapse and reach the dendrite on the next neuron.
