If N has no pz, then it only has two p orbitals, so it can only have a maximum of 6 (2s(2) and 2p(4)) valance electrons. That being the case, Nitrogen would have 5 valance electrons (2s(2) and 2p(3)) and only need to share 1 to complete its “sextet.” It would use one of the p orbitals (px) to form a single bond with the other nitrogen atom and have two nonbonding pairs for a total of 6 valance electrons, a full “sextet.”
