The northern plains have been formed by the interplay of the three major river systems the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. The Himalayan uplift out of the Tethy's sea and subsidence of the northern flank of the Peninsular plateau resulted in the formation of a large basin.
