When the plant wants to remove waste products or transpire , it opens the stomata . The water enters the guard cells which swell up and the stomata opens.......... Similarly the stomata closes by the removal of water from the guard cells

The opening and closing of the pore is a function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them, causing the stomatal pore to open. Simillarly the pore closes if the guard cells shrink
