Chlorine and fluorine  gases are stable and are not broken down by any biological process. When these gases reach the ozone layer, they break the bonds between the three atoms of oxygen in ozone, thereby leading to the destruction of the ozone molecule. This process gradually results in Ozone Depletion.

it affect us by removing a essential blanket of protection that is ozone and all protection is gone ... So anything may affect us here on earth for. e.g sun's ultraviolet rays, meteors etc...
