The ozone is formed throughout the atmosphere in multistep chemical processes that involve sunlight.

This layer is formed naturally by chemical reactions containing solar ultraviolet radiation i.e. sunlight and oxygen molecules, which make up 21% of the atmosphere.

The ultraviolet radiation from the sunlight breaks the oxygen molecule apart in the stratosphere.
