Unlike commensalism and mutualism, the parasitic relationship harms the host, either feeding on it or, as in the case of intestinal parasites, consuming some of its food. Because parasites interact with other species, they can readily act as vectors of pathogens, causing disease.

Parasites are considered to be harmful to host plant due to the following reason:
- It sucks up all the nutrition prepared by the host plant.
- It makes the most deprived of the nutrition available for its growth and development.
- The parasite doesn’t provide any benefit to the host plant.
- When a plant is infected by the host, it gets affected by many diseases and dies very early, sometimes before maturation.
