plaster of Paris can be obtained when gypsum CaSO4.2H2O is heated to 393 K

2 ( CaSO4.2H2O) --------->2 (CaSO4).H20 + 3H2O

above 393K

used:-

plaster of paris is used in the building industry as well as plasters.

it is used for immobilising the affected part of organ where there is a bone fracture or sprain

it is used in ornamental work and for making casts of statue and busts.

• Preparations : On heating gypsum at fixed temperature P.O.P is obtained. ( P.O.P  = Plaster of paris )

• CaSO₄ . 2H₂O → (373k ABOVE ARROW ) CaSO₄ . 1/2 H₂O + 1 1/2 H₂O

USES OF Plaster of paris

• Used in plastering of fractured bone.

• Also used in making toys, decoration materials and rough surfaces smooth.
