In the vertical division of power, power is shared among different levels of government- a general government for the entire country and governments at the provincial or regional level. Such a general government is called the federal or the central government. The government at the provincial or regional level is called the state government in India.

The Constitution clearly lays down the powers of different levels of government.

This division involves higher and lower levels of government which is why it is called vertical divisions of power.
