Propene reacts with dilute KMnO4 solution to give propane 1,2 diol.
- The equation of the following is as follows:-
- CH3CH=CH2 → CH3CHOH-CH2OH
- Mechanisms: 1.Potassium permanganate adds to one face of the alkene through a cycloaddition reaction to give a cyclic manganese compound (“manganate ester”).
- The manganate ester is then reduced with NaHSO3 or KHSO3 and hydrolyzed to the diol.
