Prophase in mitosis-

  • prophase is short and is without sub - stages.
  • There is no pairing of homologous chromosome (synapsis)using synaptonemal complex and hence, no chance of crossing over and chiasmata formation.
  • Prophase chromosomes appear double from the very beginning. KO

Prophase 1 in meiosis:-

  • Prophase is prolonged with 5 different sub- stages.
  • Homologous chromosome pair using synaptonemal complex during zygotene sub-stage of prophase 1 and often undergo crossing over during pachytene stage hence, forming chiasmata.
  • The chromosome appear as single thread initially.
