How quantity of heat imparted or rejected effects the change in temperature?

When a body is heated, it expands and upon cooling it contracts. This change in size of the body due to heating is called thermal expansion . The reason is that on heating a substance the average intermolecular separation between the molecules increases, while on cooling it decreases.
