The light through Earth's atmosphere then falls onto the moon. NASA notes that the red light seen during a lunar eclipse is much dimmer than a typical moon's light. That happensbecause the red light is reflected back to Earth, and it is much dimmer than the white light the sun usually shines onto the moon'ssurface.

A lunar eclipse occurs 31 Jan, 1999 when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth and the Moon are aligned (in syzygy) exactly or very closely so, with the planet in between.
