Let's say you are travelling in a bus and your friend is waiting for you in the bus stop.

  • Since your friend is in rest, you seem to be in motion , with respect to him.
  • Whereas, according to you, your friend seems to be in motion and you will be in rest.

in the first case, the frame of reference is the bus and in the second case, the frame of reference is the bus stop.

In these two observations we can see that the fact of being in rest or in motion does not remain constant and changes with each own perception. That is, it changes with the frame of reference in each cases.

So rest and motion are relative terms
