root nodules are formed in leguminous plants by the formation of infection thread by the rhizobium bacteria. It torture the cortex cells and pericycle cells to divide rapidly and form mass, which we call root nodule. And an O2 scquanger is also present that is leg haemoglobin which makes anaerobic conditions in which rhizobium bacteria work.

NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Root Nodule formation:

 Rhizobium multiply and colonise surroundings of roots and get attached to epidermal and root hair cells.

 Root hairs curl and bacteria invade root hair.

 An infection thread is produced carrying bacteria into cortex of root.

 Bacteria are released from the thread into cells.

 Infected cortical cells of root undergo differentiation to become specialized nitrogen fixing cells.

 The nodules thus formed establish direct vascular connection with host for exchange of nutrients.
