They are caused by temperature contrasts between land and water during 24 hours of the day, in simple words by differential heating of land and sea by solar radiation.

During the day, the air over land warms more than the air over water, therefore low atmospheric pressure develops on land and high air pressure is found over sea and wind starts blowing from sea to land because of the pressure gradient. This wind is called Sea breeze.

During night, land gets cooler faster than sea. Therefore high air pressure on land and low air pressure over sea develop and wind from land to sea starts blowing, this wind is known as Land breeze.
