This effect is particularly pronounced in the case oflanthanides, as the 4f subshell which is filled across these elements is not very effective atshielding the outer shell (n=5 and n=6) electrons. Thus theshielding effect is less able to counter the decrease in radius caused by increasing nuclear charge.

Shielding and its Effects on Atomic Radius. The Lanthanide Contraction is the result of a poor shielding effect of the 4f electrons. The shielding effectis described as the phenomenon by which the inner-shell electrons shieldthe outer-shell electrons so they are not effected by nuclear charge.
