To my mind, each human being is unique and is own individual person. We stereotype people in certain categories basis the way we perceive them, the way they come across, the way they react to situations, the way they interact and so on.
I am not sure in which situation are we looking for the answers - whether it is in social scenario, in a corporate scenario and so on. Your dealing with different type of people will depend upon your own context. Few of the different kind of people which you generally meet are:
The Know It All - they are the people who think they are superior, they know it all and are expert in all matters. They make other feel inferior and the way they talk switches the other person off. The best way to deal with such people is to be prepared when you meet them. You need to be factually clear on your data points with them. Since they have a habit of being an exper, it's difficult to make them listen, they tend to refute every idea as they know the best. You need to subtly put the alternative suggestion to have a constructive dialogue with the expert without getting into an argument. If they see a value add from you, they will tend to listen especially if you back your point with data.
The Cribbers - the cribbers or the complainers are the people who have nothing to do except play the victim card. They are always in criticising mode and so not take any ownership to course correct things or situations. Coping with cribbers - you need to give them a ear, listen to them, acknowledge that you understand what they are saying. You need to work with them to make them work on problem solving attitude than fault finding attitude.
The Agreeables - they are the yes man and agree to whatever is being said. They don't raise any point of view and neither contradicts with the point of view shared. To deal with such people, you need to talk to them on their approach and ask for their candid optand observation. They need to be shown that their opinion will be valued and counted. You need to show them that you value their relationship and will appreciate their own views on the situation
The Pessimist - they are the downers. They are always negative and have nothing good to talk about. They always pull the others down with their negative conotations. To deal with them, you yourself need to ensure that you don't get sucked in this, you need to be positive to have a optimistic conversation with them. You need to work on them with making positive statements and try moving the discussion into a more meaningful one.
The Gossipers - they are more into other people life, they get kick out of it by discussing openly about other people agenda, issues and so on. The best way to deal with them is to tell them directly that you are not interested in gossip and don't want to be part of it.
There may be other categories of people as well. The best way to handle each of these is not to counter them directly and listen to them, understand their coming in position as to what is making them behave on such a fashion. You need to work with them to put your point across in a subtle and assertive manner. Your response to them will also depend on your own equation with the people. If they are close to you, you just accept them and work your way through them to ensure that your equation still remains the same when you deal with them.
