Improper storage of magnets can cause loss of its magnetic properties. Sometimes even permanent magnets lose their magnetism if they are handled roughly or stored carelessly.

Some precautions to be taken while storing magnets are as follows:

  • Bar magnets should be stored in pairs with unlike poles alongside each other. A horseshoe magnet should be stored with a piece of soft iron kept across the poles (magnetic keepers).

  • Magnets lose their property if heated strongly or hammered.

  • Magnets should be kept away from heat, as heat demagnetizes magnets.

  • Electronic articles such as computers, televisions, MP3 players, CDs, etc. are very sensitive to powerful magnets. Care should be taken that no powerful magnet is around them.
