At present, atoms are not regarded as the smallest unit of matter. 'Atom' refers to indivisible in Greek i.e. something which is indivisible.Particles called quarks and leptons are the fundamental building blocks . But Physicists are still far from the fact as to why a proton has about 2,000 times more mass than an electron.

Explanation: particles of matter are very small in size. They have spaces between them . Particles of matter move constantly. They are attracted towards each other.
