In the face in the dark the man finds faceless faces because he has no one to share his feelings with so living alone he finds all those faceless faces and this moreover comes to his mind because he is a bachelor.

Ruskin Bond believed that no matter how rational a person is, there is always an element of superstition in his mental makeup. The story A Face in the Dark is about an uncanny experience of a school teacher, Mr. Oliver who while returning back to school campus through a pine forest discovers a boy with no eyes, ears, nose and mouth. He gets frightened and runs towards the school campus to meet a watchman who similarly has no eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Eyes, ears, nose and mouth are sense organs through which we make distinctions between things and ascertain our individuality to the world. As the public school in which Mr. Oliver teaches does not encourage individuality, therefore it carries on producing students who are all same, having no individuality of their own. The boy’s face with no eyes, ears, mouth and nose signifies that he has no identity of his own and probably that is the reason he is weeping. The watch man probably is also another such person who has grown up and has no individuality of his own and similarly he is faceless. Mr. Oliver for years has been producing students like them and now the sameness is haunting him. He is haunted by his own creation. It can also be read in the way that Oliver being a bachelor is lonely and needs company but all he gets is faceless faces. It might be possible that Oliver is looking for friends or family but is not able to find them. Therefore, the title is apt.

The author has ended the story here, without telling what might have happened to Oliver. Seeing from the point of view that Oliver had been using the same route for several years, it can be inferred that he might have fainted for some time with the light of lantern being blown down by the gust of wind. But after getting up, he might have given a serious thought to the issue of ghosts and supernatural beings. However, it can also be inferred that due to living alone, Oliver might be feeling lonely and therefore, caught in the grip of some psychological fears that gave rise to these imaginary, faceless creatures, roaming in the pine forest or in front of the school gate. Oliver might need company but all he got was faceless faces. It might be possible that Oliver is looking for friends or family but is not able to find them.
