Explanation:

Calcium chloride, CaCl2, is added to lower the melting point of the cell medium from the normal melting point of NaCl, 804oC, to around 600oC. The Na(l) and Cl2(g) produced in the electrolysis are kept from coming in contact and reforming NaCl.

Sodium metal can be prepared on large scale from common salt by the following process :

• Required things :

- Molten common salt. (NaCl)

- Electrolysis equipments.

• We,know that normal table salt cannot conduct electricity and that's why normal table salt is inappropriate for electrolysis.

• For this reason we have melt the normal table salt by applying a large amount of heat energy to make it's temperature more than 800°C.

• After getting molten salt we can simply perform the normal electrolysis process by using that molten salt as the electrolyte substance.

• By this electrolysis process we can produce both the sodium metal which we need and chlorine gas.
