Answer:

The effects of soil erosion go beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging these waterways and causing declines in fish and other species. And degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water, which can worsen flooding

Soil erosion has harmful consequence on the environment as well and on the natural resources.

  • Loss of fertility : Soil erosion results in the movement of fertile top soil from one region to another. The soil underneath does not contain the fertile components of topsoil . As a result, plant grow sparsely in such infertile soils.
  • Desertification : It is the formation of deserts due to continuous erosion of soil in an area. it occurs when top fertile soil is constantly removed from a region .
  • Famine : Loss of soil fertility due to soil erosion leads to insufficient growth of food crops . This leads to shortage of food if this condition continuous for longer time it causes famine.
  • Landslides : The hilly areas are constantly exposed to heavy rain falls. The areas having sparse vegetation have loose top soil and are susceptible to erosion.
