Sound is a MECHANICAL WAVE.

=》Thus it requires a Material medium for its propagation.

The sound is produced when an object or a particle is shaken and it produces other particles around it to shake. This shakening is in form of to and fro motion and leads to oscillations of the paricles.

The closer these particles are the more sound they propagate.

Hence solids propagate more sound than air.
