The matter or substance through which sound is transmitted is called a medium. Sound is produced by vibrating object.
When an object vibrates, then the particles in the surrounding medium vibrate. These particles send the vibrations to adjacent particles and energy continues to transmit until it reaches our ear.

Firstly the vibrating object vibrates the molecules in the medium. These vibrations are collected by pinna. These are amplified several times by the 3 bones hammer, anvil and stirrup and sent to the ear drum, then the ear drum starts vibrating. These vibrations are detected by nerve endings and transmitted to our brain which interprets them as sound.
