How spraying oil on the water surface can reduce the number of mosquitos?

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. when you spray oil or kerosene on top of the water, it doesn't dissolve and forms a thin layer on top of the water. So, existing eggs will not get oxygen and will die...
