The Deccan policy of the great Mughals was initially successful but ultimately failed.

Explanation:

  • Akbar started expanding his empire towards the south and the Mughal emperors like Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb also followed his policy.
  • The process of conquering the south was slow but the Mughals got success during the reign of Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan and helped it annex the states of Ahmadnagar and even suzerainty was established with Golconda and Bijapur.
  • Aurangzeb attempted to possess the wealth of Bijapur and Golconda as well and therefore, he attempted to annex them as well. But, by that time a new force had emerged in the Deccan.  Maratha Shivaji established an independent kingdom in Maharashtra at a time when Aurangzeb was bent on conquering the whole of the south.
  • Aurangzeb, of course, destroyed the Maratha Empire when Shivaji's son Shambhaji was on the Maratha throne. But, his success was short-lived. Thus, the Deccan policy was initially victorious but failed afterwards in front of Marathas.
