Villi increase the surface area available for absorption of digested food. A villus is lined with specialised epithelial cells which on their surface have projections called microvilli again to increase the surface area for absorption.

Villi are small finger like structures present in the small intestine which helps in the absorption of food. Due to the presence of large number of projections from the intestinal cells, the surface area of the cells is increased many a times which results in better absorption of nutrients from food.
