Thallophyta (Algae):

1. They are mostly aquatic.
2 The thallus consists of a single cell to well developed uniseriate or branched filaments.
3. There is no or ill defined tissue differentiation
4. In each cell one or few chloropasts are present. In other cases instead of chloroplasts, the chromatophores are present.
5. The stomata or pores are not present

Bryophyta:

1. Mostly terrestrial and prefer damp and shady places.
2. The thalles is not filamentous except in protonema stage. It is made up of parenchymatous cells.
3. There is well defined tissue differentiation.
4. In each chlorophyllous cell many well developed chloroplasts are present.
5. The pores or stomata are present

☆☆ ALGAE OR THALLOPYTA ☆☆

■ Chlorophyll bearing, simple, thalloid, autotropic and largely aquatic organisms.

■ Its Importance __________
• Help in Carbon Dioxide Fixation by carrying out photosynthesis and have immense economic importance.
• At least half of the total carbon dioxide fixation on earth carried out by them.
• Increases dissolved oxygen level in their environment.
• Many species like Laminaria, Sargassum, Porphyra etc. are used as food.
• Agar obtained from Gelidium and Gracilaria which is used in ice - creams and jellies and to grow microbes.
• Algin obtained from Brown Algea and carrageen from red algae used commercially as Hydrocolloids.
• Chlorella and Spirullina are unicellular algae, rich in protein and used even by space travellers.
• Algea are unicellular like Chlamydomonas, colonial like Volvox, flamentous like Spirogyra and Ulothrix. Occur in water, soil, wood moist stones etc.

☆☆ BRYOPHYTES ☆☆

■ They are called "Amphibian Of Plant Kingdom".
■ Occur in dump, humid and shaded places.
■ Lack of true roots, stem or leaves.
■ Main plant body is haploid and thallus like (prostrate or erect).
■ Economic Importance :- Food for herbacceous animals.
• Sphagnum in from of peat is used as fuel and also as packing material for trans-shipment materials, as it has water holding capacity.
• Prevents Soil Erosion, alongwith lichens are first colonoizers on barren rock.
■ It is divided into two classes Liverworts [ thalloid body, dorsiventral, e.g. Marchantia ] and Mosses [have two stages in gametophyte-creeping, green branched, filamentous Protonema stage and Leafy Stage having spirally arranged leaves e.g. Funaria, Polytrichum and Sphagnum ].
