For a strong acid and a strong base in water, the neutralization reaction is between hydrogen and hydroxide ions—i.e., H3O+ + OH− ⇄ 2H2O. For a weak acid and a weak base, neutralization is more appropriately considered to involve direct proton transfer from the acid to the base.
