Divide and rule (or divide and conque) in politics and sociology is gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy.

Divide and Rule policy was a policy of the British in which they sowed the seeds of hatred among communities of Hindus and Muslims so that we could not be united and strong enough to fight with the British .
