Charge can flow in a conductor by applying a potential difference between its ends.

  • Potential difference is defined as the amount of work done in bringing a charge from one point to another. It is denoted by 'V' and it's unit is joules per coulomb (J/C) or volt.
  • The electric charge is nothing but the movement of electrons of electrons in the conductor due to their kinetic energy when a potential difference is applied. The electrons which randomly move about are directed towards the positive terminal of the circuit.
  • The application of heat will actually increase the resistance to the flow of current. On heating the conductor, the electrons are further excited which results in collisions with each other as well as with the stationary protons. This reduces the amount of current in the conductor.
  • Ohm's law also states that the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its ends, and inversely proportional to the resistance applied.
