The coal is formed when water and dirt covers plants.Then rocks,dirt and sediment create pressure to form coal.Thank you

millions of years ago the earth was covered with dense forests which later on,due to natural disasters like flood etc have covered it.these plants get compressed under high pressure and temperature and form lignite then anthracite(coal).
