Large dams and the reservoirs that are created, cause economic as well as environmental problems. Unless these issues are considered beforehand, it can far outweigh the benefits of the dam project - such as provision of water for drinking and irrigation, generation of hydroelectric power and flood control.
First and foremost, dams displace people, flora and fauna from their natural habitat. Reservoirs inundate several thousands of acres of land and hamper the movement of migratory creatures. Agricultural land which are developed as a result, can destroy the natural ecosystem. Dams can weaken with age and is a potential for disaster.
