The process of digestion occurs in the alimentary canal.The alimentary canal includes the following parts.

1. mouth
2. oesophagus
3. stomach
4. duodenum
5. small intestine
6. large intestine

We take food into the mouth.We masticate the food.Then saliva digests some of the carbohydrates.Then the food passes through oesophagus in the form chyme [the food in which already some proteins and carbohydrates are broken down].From here food passes into the stomach through peristalsis.Then the stomach secrets hydro chloric acid.The contraction of the stomach leads to the mixing of the food.Then the partially digested food is sent into duodenum in small quantities. When food enters the small intestine the acidic nature of chyme initiates the production of secretin etc.The walls of the intestine allows only essential nutrients.

   Then the unwanted materials are sent to large intestine where the excess water is absorbed and the unwanted materials are sent out of the body through rectum and anus.
