An electric fuse is an safety device which breaks the electric circuit when there is an excessive flow of current in the circuit.A fuse works on the heating effect of current. A fuse consists of a thin wire (generally an alloy of tin and copper) having low melting point. It is always connected in series with the electric circuit. When excessive current flows in a household circuit the thin fuse wire gets too much heated and melts and breaks the circuit. The current stops flowing in the circuit and thus prevents damage to various electrical appliances and prevents any possible fire. When a fuse gets melted a new fuse has to be fitted in its place to restore the electric supply back in the circuit.
