The mechanical vibrations of the stapes footplate at the oval window creates pressure waves in the perilymph of the scala vestibuli of the cochlea. The waves move around the tip of the cochlea through the helicotrema into the scala tympani & dissipate as they hit the round window. The wave motion is transmitted to the endolymph inside the cochlear duct.As a result the basilar membrane, stimulating generation of nerve impulses to the brain.

Answer:

The oval window has a smaller area than the eardrum. So this increase pressure on the oval window and on the liquid in cochlea.

The vibration of liquid into cochlea affects the thousands of auditory nerve which send messages to brain.
