in very extreme cold the upper layer of water freezes and the Ice act as an insulator .which do not allow to heat come out or come in so in the bottom of lake bulb temperature 4 degree Celsius and in that temperature fishes and other creature can survive easily by using dissolve oxygen present in water

EXPLANATION
