Igneous rocks (from the Latin word for fire) form when hot, molten rock crystallizes and solidifies. The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots, then rises toward the surface.

Igneous rocks from when hot, liquid magma form inside the earth cools and becomes solid. When this happens below ground, the rocks are called as intrusive.when magma comes to the surface as lava and cools down above ground, the rocks are called extrusive

Fun Fact

•The word "igneous" is derived from the Latin ignis, meaning "of fire". Volcanic rocks are named after Vulcan, the Roman name for the god of fire. Intrusive rocks are also called "plutonic" rocks, named after Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld.

•Most of the earth's crust is made out of igneous rock.•Many mountains are made out of igneous rocks.

•When magma rises to the surface of the Earth and hardens, it forms extrusive igneous rock. Extrusive igneous rock tends to be glassy in texture because their formation occurs very rapidly. Examples of extrusive igneous rock include pumice and basalt
