ld system (till 1993) – Judges of Supreme Court used to be appointed by the President of India upon the advice of the Union Cabinet.

Present System (1993 till date)– After the rulings of Three Judges Cases by Supreme Court, the President was appointing the judges chosen by the Supreme Court’s collegium consisting of the Chief Justice of India and the four most senior associate judges of the court. Thus the Government and the Parliament had no role to play in the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court or any of the 24 High Courts. The collegium chooses the judges from among the chief justices of the various High Courts or the senior most presiding judges of the High Courts.

New System (as per the bill passed in the Parliament on 14th August, 2014)

The job is now shifted to a committee (NJAC) of 6 members consisting of the Chief Justice of India (CJI), the next two most senior judges of the Supreme Court, the Law minister and 2 eminent persons (these 2 people are chosen by a committee consisting of Prime Minister, the leader of the largest opposition party and the CJI). So, this is a hybrid of Old system (only government was choosing) and Present system (only judges were choosing) consisting of Judges as well as the people from the Government.
