The number of chromosomes in each generation are maintained due to meiosis. The meiosis is a kind of reductive division. When gametes are formed by meiosis, the number of chromosomes are halved. Hence each gamete will have only one pair of chromosome.

Since by meiosis in gametogenesis the gametes formed are haploid and by fusion of two gametes results in the formation of a diploid zygote and after the formation of zygote the cell division that takes place is mitosis so the new generation formed is diploid again and thus the no of chromosomes are maintained
