Plasmodium looks like a signet ring structure under the microscope.

However, the appearance of Plasmodium under the microscope varies with the species and stage of its development.

1. Trophozoites:

They have the typical characteristic signet ring shape.

Unique feature: multiple trophozoites in a single cell.

2. Gametocyte:

P. falciparum- Their gametocytes have a crescent or banana shaped structure.

P.malariae- round shaped and granular gametocytes equivalent to the size of a red blood cell.

P.ovale- round shaped gametocyte having a size bigger than the red blood cells.

3. Schizont:

P.malariae- schizont containing merozoites and course granular appearance is observed.

P.vivax- Larger in size than red blood cell and also multiple merozoites observed.
