Wordsworth listens to the song of the highland lass and realizes that it is of a certain melancholic nature. But the poet feels that the song that fills the valley is a lot sweeter than the song of the nightingale that welcomes the travelers to an Arabian oasis. He feels that the song surpasses the song of the cuckoo of the Hebrides in its sweetness.

Unfortunately Wordsworth could not understand the language of the song. He then goes on to guess out the theme of the song. Since he was sure that it expressed grief, he thinks that it may be of some old sad incident in the past or a past war. It may even be about some ordinary sorrow of day-to-day happenings. He feels that it may be about some past loss or a loss that is repeated. Whatever  it is, the girl sang as if she could never stop and the strains of the song remained with the poet even after he had left her far behind. Such was the sweetness of her song.
